Recently there were two new startup search engines introduced. SearchCloud, a new search engine using Yahoo! search technology and Cuil, a search engine indexing more than 120 billion web pages.
But why would anyone struggle to develop new search engine if there are already well established search engines on the market: Google, Yahoo! and MSN?
Why spend millions of dollars on something that already exists? Because if someone creates something competitive and possibly better than the GYM it will cost billions of dollars.
Even small percentage of search market is worth millions of dollars. And if someone manage to develop a search engine that would serve more relevant search results, be more customized, index more websites and be faster and cheaper than the existing search engines it will be worth every money.
Remember that Google was also not the first search engine on the market. But they managed to do it better than other search engines. They set the standards, created unique algorithm and serve better results helping people find what they are looking for.
And that was it, they succeeded. So why someone else can’t do it even better?
Even with small budgets but a great idea there might be a day we will see a search engine better than Google. That’s why Google is constantly trying to addict people to use their services like Gmail, Google search engine, Google Docs, Talk and so on. That way even if a new search engine would have better search results people would stay with Google and their services. Thats the strategy of Google. And that’s why it will be much much harder for a startup search engines to breakthrough.
But it must be very interesting to see the time when Google is not number one search engine on the international search market.

It is true, that there is a lot of competition already as far as search engine goes. But I am a believer that things can always be improved. Sure, Google may be the king right now. But it would be very possible to create a niche search engine, that is good for specific things. I agree, it would be very interesting to see the day when Google is the monster of search engines.

@Justin Wright There are still many areas not discovered by any search engine out there. Development of video and picture search engines is also the future, but not like the ones that exist. Im talking about searching for faces in the pictures instead of its description or file name. Im talking about searching for videos based on persons voice, not description. Im talking about recognizing what are the pictures and video files about, about understanding its message and searching according to this data. Search engines for mobile phones and many more are still underdeveloped.
So far Google is trying to develop a tool to turn video speech into text. But there is still many things to improve and do.
