Pawel Szulencki Search Engine Optimization/Marketing blog.
Welcome back! Thanks for sticking by.
As you all know, images on your website should also be optimized for the purposes of search engine optimization. Why? - you may ask. Because images are parts of your website that send an message through image to your users. It may be a 50% discount offer or special promotion. While your users will see all the images on your website, search engines are blind for them. The simply can not “see” and “read” images (not yet, but its going to change soon). Thats why it’s important to help them understand images meaning.
Search engines can only read text and luckily images can also be described with text. An image is worth a thousand words. But which words are those?
In search engine optimization is it important to describe images correctly with use of keywords relevant to your website. a simple alt=”image description” tag help search engines understand image meaning. In this tag you should describe as accurately as possible what the image is about with use of keywords (preferable, thought not always possible). BY adding this tag you also allow users see description of the image in case if an image is not loaded from the server due to any reason. That way they will still understand image meaning and be able to react to it.
Optimizing images will help search engines understand their meaning and may help bring some additional traffic from vertical search engines, such as image search engines. It is true that it will not be huge amounts of traffic (as long as your main websites purpose are not pictures), but you will see some visitors coming to your website from those vertical search engines. And soon, when advanced search engines will be fully developed image search will bring much more targeted traffic and also thats why its good to care about image optimization now.
For now, add alt=”" tag to your images with appropriate description with use of keywords. Don’t try to spam this tag with multiplying keywords or stuffing this tag with dozens of sentences with no meaning. It doesn’t work anymore. Optimize your images well and you will see increase of traffic from vertical search engines.
