Pawel Szulencki Search Engine Optimization/Marketing blog.
Welcome back! Thanks for sticking by.
Here are some tips on how to optimize websites for universal search purposes:
1. Be visible in vertical search engines. As universal search means blended results from vertical search results, being visible in those engines may result in bigger targeted traffic. Although results from, for instance maps.google.com may vary from maps presented in universal search results in OneBox results, it is important to be visible in those results.
2. If you have a mortal brick company point out your head office address or any other office addresses you can. That will let search engines correlate your business with your local area. If you can, describe the area where your company operates. That may help get listed higher in results when your local customers search for type of business as yours.
3. Gain inbound links from local partners, local news web portals, local newspaper, etc. Local connections can help boost your local presence. Links from related websites in your local area may help much better than even related links from websites not in your area with similar reputation.
4. Engage with social media. Try to promote your business in social media websites. Try to gain some reputation within certain social website and create a community of users. That way you can attract natural links and get the word of mouth virus spread faster. Search engines will also notice your websites visibility and reward it in some way (or punish if used in inappropriate way).
5. Don’t focus on rankings. In universal search world rankings don’t mean much. Try to focus on developing valuable content, user-friendly environment and unique services.
6. Optimize your listings in vertical search engines, try to generate reviews to your site (for instance in local listings in Google) - those sites get higher ranks in universal search blended results.
7. Optimize your site text and tags to suit your local targeted audience in the best way. Try to optimize your site for as many keywords as possible (the long tail strategy). That may help be visible on high places for different users.
