There was a great buzz over Google’s new favicon image lately. They didn’t change it for over 8,5 years. Everyone got used to their old icon. So why did they changed it?
Official Google blog answer by : “The reason is that we wanted to develop a set of icons that would scale better to some new platforms like the iPhone and other mobile devices.”
They developed the following icon set that everyone can see in their browsers and other mobile devices: (from Google official Blog):
There is more, they developed whole bunch of different icon set variations. They “tried in total more than 300 permutations”!! It’s a hard work i can say and a job well done. I don’t know how about you, but i like the new Google icons. They are smooth, clearly visible, original and simple. I’m not saying the old favicons were not. I’m just saying i like the changes Google made. Some of other Google ideas include:
Looks good right?
But it’s not final versions of their favicons. You can help develop the final ones by designing your own Google favicon image set and send it to Google at http://www.google.com/faviconideas/ But you have to be fast. The deadline is on June 20th, 2008. Maybe you get lucky and your design will be displayed in Google to billions of people around the world.

That’s really cool to know. I didn’t know that’s why they changed the icon. Sounds like a good reason to me.

As you can see they had plenty of different designs to chose from. And i suppose they have plenty more that they didn’t show.
Btw, changing the logo of one of the most recognized brands in the world isn’t as easy task as many could think.
