Some days ago Google Trends started to show a Swastika symbol on top placements. A swastika was a Nazi Germany symbol and since then has a very bad association and is very controversial symbol.
See position number 14 on the picture below:
There was a great buzz over what it means and why Google trends is showing this symbol in results for most searched queries. Well, swastika is a widely recognized symbol in many different religions and in different places on Earth it means different thing, so we should stay cool about the whole google-shows-swastika thing.
Archaeological evidence of swastika-shaped ornaments dates from the Neolithic period. An ancient symbol, it occurs mainly in the cultures that are in modern day India and the surrounding area, sometimes as a geometrical motif (as in the Roman Republic and Empire) and sometimes as a religious symbol. It was long widely used in major world religions such as shamanism - Wikipedia.
See what Wikipedia has to say on swastika.
A Google spokesperson statement:
The Hot Trends list is automatically generated by machines and algorithms that detect hot or breaking queries. In this case, it appears that the html code for this query was posted on a popular Internet bulletin board, which led to quite a few people searching to find out more about this symbol. The Hot Trends list reflected that surge due to people searching with this query.
When you type 卐 into Google trends you will see no results now (at least it doesnt show any results to me). But if you check Google trends for today, July 13, 2008 you will see that #21328 code is at number one position.
卐
is ascii representation of swastika and if you type it into google search engine you will see all Chinese websites with firs result referring to Wikipedia article about swastika. Therefore i think there is no reason to worry.
