Search Engine Marketing is a process of advertising on internet through different techniques, such as paid listing, paid inclusion and SEO (Search Engine Optimization). I will not cover SEO in this post as you can read more about it in my previous entry. I shall focus on paid advertising.
SEM is a way to promote websites on internet by paying other sites to add link to that site, an article or simply pay for place in search engine result page. As link popularity is one of most important factors for search engines to rank sites, buying links is a good way of gaining more popularity and higher positions in SERP’s.
All major search engines have advertising platforms, where advertisers can pay for position in search engines result pages. The highest bid wins 1st position, second bidder gets 2nd position and so on. Its a kind of bidding auction for keywords. For those with big budget its a good way to improve brand awareness among internet users. For those with smaller budgets its good way to advertise for niche keywords and attract more clients to their websites.
Paid campaigns effectiveness are usually easy to measure which makes it very attractive. Instead of paying for banner impressions with little or no conversion rate and very little click through rate its more economic to pay for PPC campaigns for every client that come to our site. Thats why SEM became so powerful. Its easily accessible for all advertisers, scalable, measurable and easy to set up.
Search Engine Marketing combined with Search Engine Optimization can give much better results than both processes separately. Its a case when 1+1 >2. Combined together those techniques can bring better effects than separately. So why not implement it in your own website?
