Welcome back! Thanks for sticking by.
The affiliate duplicate content issue and the same product description on various websites duplicate content issue have one thing in common: many people using the same content provided by one side and used by many webmasters to promote products or services. Lets see what causes it and how to avoid it.
1. Affiliate marketing is an Internet-based marketing practice in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliates marketing efforts. Affiliate marketing overlaps with [...] regular advertising methods[...]: organic search engine optimization, paid search engine marketing, e-mail marketing, and in some sense display advertising - Wikipedia.
How affiliates may cause duplicate content issues?
In order to generate income from their affiliate doings, affiliate program members need to create marketing content on other websites to attract visitors to click on affiliate link and generate income that way. If you have lots of affiliates, some of them may be lazy or incapable of creating their own, unique content to market their affiliate efforts.
You should also, as a good affiliate program owner, give your affiliates some possible, sample marketing resources, either content, graphics, tips etc. to show them the way you wish your services should be market and to have some control over what you affiliates use as advertisement of your own brand.
All of the above may cause a duplicate content issues. Some percentage of affiliates may be using only the content you deliver to them, which they will re-publish in unchanged way on other pages causing possible duplicate content issues.
How to avoid affiliates duplicate content issue?
2. The same product description on different websites is often outcome when e-commerce shops publish manufacturers product descriptions on their websites instead of changing the description. Product manufacturers, publishers and producers always create descriptions for their products and send it to other companies which may use it on their own websites.
Lets take for example:
“Toshiba Satellite L305-S5907 15.4-Inch Laptop (2.0 GHz Intel Pentium Dual Core T3200 Processor, 4 GB RAM, 320 GB Hard Drive, DVD Drive, Vista Premium)”.
There are 809 results for that search query in Google search engine. Thats a lot the same product descriptions on different website, right?
How to solve the same product description duplicate content issue?
Actually there are small chances that your site will be penalized with duplicate content penalty for using manufacturer product description. Search engines understand the way e-commerce sites operate and they usually do not penalize for that kind of behavior. Nevertheless i suggest creating unique product descriptions or at least adding something from yourself to the product description to limit that possibility, show your clients additional information about product and stand out of the crowd of other e-commerce shops.

Hi,
First time visiting your blog. I’m not at the level which I’ll create my own affiliate program. But if I have a affiliate program. I’ll also encourage them to buy the product themselves first and write their own content about the product.
There are many product reviews on the internet. Most of them are almost the same. People who read our review might read others’ reviews as well. If everyone’s reviews are almost the same, people are not convinced to buy because they know that there’s a high possibility that these affiliates haven’t even try the product.

@Alex- The Blog Traffic Guy: Yes, exactly Alex. Encouraging our affiliates to create unique marketing content will benefit our own business by becoming more trustworthy and spreading our products and services into new markets.
Also, good point with the reviews.

how to avoid duplicate content on your website, you should be able to avoid the dreaded ‘Google duplicate content penalty’. In fact this is not a penalty so much as a filter, that removes what is considered to be duplicate content. Read more…..
