After the launch of international SEO contest for key phrase “SEOcontest2008” in just few days Google indexed over 10,000 websites for this term. Many webmasters and SEO participants are using techniques regarded to be Black Hat SEO and “spammy”. Many contestants are using free hosting services like WordPress or Blogspot. As domain name is important in SEO process most of SEOcontest2008 participants are registering domains with the SEOcontest2008 key phrase in it hoping that it will help them gain high rankings in Google and win the 2008 SEO contest grand prize of $1000.

That made hundreds of people to register their blogs with SEOcontest2008 similar names causing WordPress and Blogspot remove some of the blogs for violating TOS as they were considered to be spam. For those webmasters, whose websites have been removed the contest began again as they now have to set up new pages and optimize them to be on top of Google SERP for SEOcontest2008 keyword.

Most contestants are using techniques not always regarded to be White Hat SEO in order to gain higher ranking like spammy comments with their website address and irrelevant forum post. Some websites have no valuable content and their sites are filled with unreadable and unimportant keywords just to gain high ranking. Such websites have no value and they spam search engines results making it hard for people to find anything important and valuable. At this point a question arises: Are any SEO contests good for search engines and people looking for informations? I will try to answer for that question in my next post.

[Update, 18th of February 2008] Read “SEO contests vs Google” post where i try to answer the above question.
